The Ningaloo Research Centre will be dedicated to doing science, translating science and communicating science.
The many research projects in the Ningaloo, Cape Range and Exmouth Gulf are producing a vast quantity of quality science directed at answering management questions and filling in knowledge gaps.
According to the Commonwealth Government report State of the Marine Environment (1995)
“The sustainability of marine and coastal systems depends on Australians knowing about the marine environment, recognising threats to it, wanting to care for it, and learning the skills to look after it”.
This means that the scientific research findings need to be communicated to the general public in a way that is meaningful to them.
Education is the only way to assist people to understand and appreciate the value of the Ningaloo Reef, Cape Range and Exmouth Gulf and the need to manage these assets sustainably.
The Ningaloo Research Centre will have an education module dedicated to explaining the complexities of marine and coastal resource management from the scientific, utilisation and preservation perspectives.
